Artificial Intelligence Transforming Healthcare: Is Africa Ready?

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential for healthcare in Africa by addressing infrastructure limitations, workforce shortage, and health disparities. AI-driven tools can enhance diagnostic accuracy and expand access through telemedicine, improve public health surveillance, and optimize resource allocation in low-resource settings. However, adaptation faces barriers, including data scarcity, skills gaps, inadequate digital infrastructure, nascent regulatory frameworks, and ethical concerns. This paper examines the integration of AI into African healthcare systems, analyzing the technological, ethical, and social impediments to adoption. Ultimately, while Africa demonstrates robust foundational readiness through rapid mobile penetration and emerging pilot success, a full systematic readiness remains conditional. Coordinated efforts prioritizing infrastructure investment, capacity building, ethical frameworks, and context- specific policies are essential to enable equitable benefits from AI and strengthen health systems globally.
